Wendover v Downley Dynamos | Geoff Springell Cup Round 3 | Sunday 7th March 2010 - Dry & Sunny

First Half – A smaller than usual pitch and kicking up hill seemed to affect the boys in the early stages of the game, with less space they seemed to be getting in each others way. Wendover took the lead when a cross from a corner looped over Josh straight into the net. A couple of goal mouth scrambles could have resulted in Wendover extending their lead but luckily they went Downley’s way. With the fluency and commitment of previous weeks missing it took a piece of skill from Humzah to level the scores with him controlling a high ball and then shooting into the bottom corner. Wendover then took the lead again after breaking the offside trap to go in at half time 2-1 up.

Second Half – The half time team talk was based on commitment, if the boys could improve that they certainly had the quality to go on and win. As usual the boys responded well creating various chances with the midfield of Daniel, Liam G, Matt D and Liam B playing some simple but effective football. Downley finally equalised with the help from the bounce of the ball, a long ball bounced over an advancing keeper and Clarence used his pace to tap in from close range. With extra time approaching Wendover managed to break clear to go one on one with the keeper but Josh was up to the challenge to ensure the game went to extra time.

Extra time – The first half of extra time was dominated by Downley without any success in front of goal but the second half was a different story. Downley found an extra couple of gears, Clarence shot into the roof of the net from just inside the area (2-3) and Humzah used his skill to create a chance for Liam G to score from close range (2-4). Downley then conceded a penalty but once again Josh was up to the task to save the penalty and the rebound. Humzah then got his second after breaking free and then stabbing home (2-5). The score line was complete with some neat footwork and a confident finish from Joe W (2-6).

Summary – After a poor first half the boys once again showed that they had the desire and ability to go and beat a competent Wendover side that hasn’t lost a game in the league this season. The boys now find themselves in the last eight of another cup competition and are likely to face very difficult opposition in the next round.

Risborough Rangers v Downley Dynamos | League | Sunday 21st February 2010 - Cold & Wet

First Half – The early stages of the game saw us waste two one-on-one chances, but some neat passing in midfield was finally rewarded when Clarence was put through on goal who calmly slotted past the keeper. Downley were awarded a penalty after a handball in the area but the Risborough keeper saved the spot kick and then the rebound from point blank range. Downley did get a second shortly before half time though with Clarence using his speed again to outstrip the Risborough defence.

Second Half – Downley could have taken a three goal lead straight after half time but instead Risborough went straight up the other end to cut the deficit in half. The boys responded well and continued to pass the ball well in midfield. Two more goals from Clarence and one from Humzah seemed to have put the game out of Risborough’s reach. But some sloppy play, careless mistakes and a well taken penalty from Risborough brought the scoreline back to 5-4. Making the last minute or two very edgy for the Downley supporters.

Summary – On the whole this was another good performance although we do need to cut out the silly mistakes and be even more clinical in front of goal.

Holy Trinity Juniors v Downley Dynamos | Friendly | Saturday 20th February 2010 - Mild & Dry

Summary – A friendly match that was arranged to give some of the boys a little extra match practice proved a very worthwhile exercise. Although the boys started a little slowly they soon got into their stride and dominated most of the match. Goals were scored by Joe (2), Clarence, Liam B, Liam G and Humzah. Well done to the boys that were playing in their first game for a while.

Flackwell Heath Minors v Downley Dynamos | League Cup 5th Round (Quarter Final) | Sunday 7th February 2010 - Mild & Dry

First Half – A fairly even start to the match until a long ball from deep inside the Flackwell half managed to beat the whole Downley team and was collected by a Flackwell player who calmly slotted past an advancing Josh. Downley reacted well and when Humzah beat the defender with some neat skills his cross managed to find Alfie who tapped in from close range for the equaliser.  Flackwell took the lead once again heading in unchallenged from close range only for Matt Dawson to level from the penalty spot after Liam G was fouled. Half time 2-2.

Second Half – Downley started the second half well and took the lead for the first time with a second goal from Alfie. It was becoming a very tight and tense game, Josh was maintaining our lead with some great saves and we had two great chances to put the game out of Flackwell’s reach but were unfortunately not taken. As the minutes passed Flackwell started put the pressure on and this led to an equaliser after another close range header. Full time 3-3.

Extra Time – The first half of extra time was fairly even but Flackwell started to take control in the second but with only a few minutes to go and with penalties looking likely Flackwell managed to beat the defence and shot past Josh for the winner.

Summary – This was a very good game with two very evenly matched sides, neither team really deserved to lose. This was also our first meeting against a team from Division 1 and we acquitted ourselves very well. Although the boys were very disappointed at the end they should be very proud of themselves and they have proved they are a match for anyone. Well done boys, lets get back to winning ways in the league.

Hercules Lions v Downley Dynamos | League Cup 4th Round | Sunday 22nd January 2010 - Cold & Dry

Welcome back after our prolonged Christmas break. It has been a long time coming but we have finally kicked off the second half of the season and the boys certainly didn’t disappoint.
First Half – After an understandably slow start the boys gradually started to take control of the game with good passing and hard work, although it did take a superb last ditch sliding tackle from Aaron to prevent Hercules from taking the lead. As usual Clarence was a constant threat up front and when he latched on to a through ball he fired past the Hercules keeper for a 1 – 0 lead. However this was short lived as Hercules then broke through to slot past an advancing Josh. As half time approached Downley were then denied a clear penalty when Liam B had his heels clipped just as he was about to shoot.

Second Half – Downley started the half the stronger team dominating possession and territory, they were strong in the tackle and they passed the ball well. This was rewarded with a clever flick from Humzah to put Clarence through on goal to finish well with his left foot. Shortly after a free kick was played into the Hercules penalty area, it wasn’t cleared properly and a slight scramble led to Clarence scoring his and the teams third goal. With Downley looking very comfortable and untroubled Hercules Lions broke through the Downley defence, with Aaron gaining ground he made a last ditch lunge to knock the ball clear only for the referee to harshly award Hercules a penalty, which was duly converted to make it 3 – 2. This made the last ten minutes very edgy but Downley saw the game out to advance to the quarter finals.

Summary – A very long Christmas break didn’t seem to affect our boys too much as they started where they left off before Christmas putting in a very accomplished performance. They worked hard for each other, made some excellent tackles and passed the ball very well. This was a game that we all desperately wanted to win to make up for an undeserved loss earlier in the season. Well done boys!!

Downley Dynamos v Risborough Rangers | Sunday 13th December 2009 –  Cold & Dry

First Half

After having a week off last week the boys were anxious to get going again. They started slowly but gradually worked their way into the game taking control and creating a couple of good chances with Clarence shooting just wide and Liam G not quite managing to get on the end of a chance at the far post. Downley’s dominance finally paid dividends with a shot across the keeper from Clarence nestling in the bottom left corner. Shortly after Liam G found himself in a similar position to earlier in the half at the far post but this time he was able to convert from close range. With Downley looking comfortable and half time approaching Risborough managed to break free and pull a goal back against the run of play.  This had a negative affect on our boys who started to panic in possession which allowed Risborough to go on and equalise on the stroke of half time with a well struck shot.

Second Half – After a bit of a talking to at half time the boys came out in the second half determined to make up for the poor final ten minutes of the first half. They controlled the game playing some nice football, creating good chances but not able to get that important third goal. Long range efforts from Matt D and Liam B were well saved, an effort from Humzah trickled just wide of the post and efforts from Alfie L and Liam G were well struck but straight at the Risborough keeper. It looked like all of Downley’s good play was going to be unrewarded until a corner in the last minute was swung into the box, Aaron C managed to get there first with a fantastic header past the keeper for the winner.

Summary – A great goal to win a good game of football and it was thoroughly deserved. We are now coming up to our Christmas break having played just over half of our league matches and we are perched in second position just one point behind the leaders and we are still in both cup competitions.  We have everything to play for next year and providing we do not get complacent and keep working hard there is no reason why we cannot make this a very successful season. Geoff, Tony L, Tony G and myself would like to wish everyone a very Happy Christmas and  thank all of the parents for there great support in what has been at times a very difficult first half of the season.

Downley Dynamos v Holmer Green Minors | Sunday 29th November 2009 –  Cold & Wet

First Half – After a disappointing game last week the boys were determined to get back to winning ways this week and they got off to a good start against a slightly weakened Holmer Green side dominating the early stages which lead to an opening goal from Humzah who slotted past a disorientated goalkeeper. Clarence then outpaced the defence to fire past the keeper to make it 2-0. Holmer didn’t threaten too often but they did break free to go clear on goal only for Aaron Carroll to make an outstanding last ditch tackle. Some good work down the right saw Clarence cut the ball back to Liam Gay who scored from close range and with half time approaching Clarence then used his strength and speed to outstrip the Holmer Green defence to score Downley’s fourth and his second of the game.

Second Half – The second half was nothing short of the Clarence show with his pace causing havoc, he added another three goals (could have been more) to his tally each one almost identical with him outpacing the defence to go one on  one with keeper. Alfie Lee then got in on the act to complete the scoring again with a one on one with keeper.

Summary – This was a very comfortable win with Holmer Green rarely troubling. The boys are now starting to add goals to there already solid defensive displays.  Eight goals and a clean sheet - couldn’t ask for any more. Well done boys!

Aston Clinton Colts v Downley Dynamos | Sunday 22nd November 2009 – Very Cold & Very Wet & Very Windy

First Half – With terrible weather conditions the boys made a very slow start and had it not been for some good goalkeeping from Josh Gurton could have been a couple down after a few minutes. However Aston did take the lead when a shot from almost on the half way line caught the wind and then bounced over an advancing Josh in goal. This seemed to kick the Downley boys into life who started to dominate and play some good football leading to an equaliser from Clarence Nzeh after a mistake from the opposing keeper. This was short lived as Aston Clinton snatched two quick goals just before half time to go 3-1 up.

Second Half – By the time the second half kicked off Downley were demoralised with the weather reducing some of our boys to tears. Two free kicks one from Jack Carroll and one from Liam Bradley were cleared off the line but Aston Clinton then went on to score a fourth late on to make it 4-1.

Summary – This was a very difficult game against a good Aston team and very difficult weather conditions. The boys found it very difficult to keep themselves warm as did the supporters who braved the conditions. This was our first defeat in seven games so the boys have to pick themselves up and get back to winning ways against Holmer Green next week.

League Cup Round 3 – Chesham United Youth v Downley Dynamos | Sunday 15th November 2009 – Mild, Clear & Dry

First Half – Downley started very well dominating the early stages creating various chances, Alfie Lee shooting wide from close range, Liam Gay’s curling shot just wide of the top right hand corner and a couple of penalty area scrambles were hacked clear. Downley eventually took the lead with a ball threaded through  to Clarence Nzeh who shot  passed the keeper from the edge of the area. Further chances were squandered but Downley did get a second after a shot was parried by the keeper but Alfie Lee was well positioned for a tap in.

Second Half – Downley continued in much the same way as the first half dominating play but wasting chances. Matt Dawson was fouled in the area and picked himself up to score from the penalty spot to make it 3-0 and Liam Bradley completed the scoring firing in from close range after a goal mouth scramble.

Summary – This was a very good performance from the Downley boys, they dominated the match from start to finish. The defensive combination of Josh, Jan, Aaron, Sam,  Matt G, Jack M and Matt A was solid throughout and were delighted with a second consecutive clean sheet. Matt D and Liam B dominated the midfield playing some good football and had some good options out wide in Alfie, Liam G and Jack C. The strikers Clarence, Joe and Daniel were a constant threat up front. A couple of comments were made after the game, one from the opposing manager who said we were a very well organised team. The second coming from a Downley supporter who said we are getting better and better each week. Keep up the good work boys Fabrice would be very proud of you all.

Geoff Springell Memorial Cup Round 2 - Downley Dynamos v Chalfont Wasps | Sunday 8th November 2009 – Cold, Cloudy & Dry

First Half – Downley started well camping inside the Chalfont penalty area in the first five minutes and were unlucky not to take the lead but for blocks on the line, saves by the keeper and poor finishing. Downley then got a couple of lucky breaks with a penalty for hand ball which Matt Dawson converted and then a couple of minutes later a shot from Oliver Munby trickled past the diving Chalfont keeper. Downley continued to dominate playing some good passing football but only managed to go in at half time 2-0 up.

Second Half – Downley started in much the same way as the first half but it wasn’t until a determined run from Ryan Daley resulted in a blatant penalty which Matt Dawson duly converted for his second of the game. Shortly after Clarence Nzeh used his pace to outstrip the Chalfont defence and then fired over the keeper from distance for the fourth of the game. Joe Wilson who had come on for Humzah Iqbal at half time then skillfully chipped the keeper and then fired low past the keeper for the fifth and sixth of the game.

Summary – In a game that Downley were expected to win they didn’t disappoint despite making many changes throughout the course of the game. For most of the game they were solid in defence, passed the ball well in midfield and were clinical up front and a special mention for Matthew Gippert who gave a very accomplished confident performance.

Downley Dynamos v Crendon Corinthians | Sunday 1st November 2009 – Cold, Windy & Very Wet

First Half – In extremely difficult conditions Downley started well dominating the early stages with some good possession and pressure but it was Crendon that opened the scoring against the run of play with an unfortunate own goal. Downley continued to plug away in what was becoming a scrappy match and were rewarded with an equaliser just before half time with a good strike from Clarence Nzeh.

Second Half – Crendon continued to battle hard and showed great determination but Downley took the lead with a well taken effort from Joe Wilson. Joe had the ball in the back of the net once more but it was ruled out for off-side. The weather seemed to be affecting Downley more than Crendon and they deservedly equalised with ten minutes to go. Just when it looked like Crendon might go on to get the winner some good play down the right resulted in a close range effort from Liam Gay to take the lead once more with minutes to spare. Crendon still found time to go one on one with the keeper but Josh Gurton made a good save with his feet.

Summary – In a game where a draw would have been a fair result the boys have battled to the end and taken what could be a very important three points. A good performance in dreadful conditions with a special mention for Yan Sukovoy, who put in a very strong determined display.

Geoff Springell Memorial Cup Round 1 - Downley Dynamos v Chesham | Sunday 3rd October 2009 - Dry, Sunny

First Half - Most of the many first half chances came Downley's way. Alfie Lee broke through their defence several times but neither his shots or passes into the box were converted. Matt Dawson and Oliver Munby scrambled as a result of a corner. Matt's overhead shot going wide. Jo Wilson hit the cross bar on 15 minutes and Ryan Daley's right foot tap in front of goal was also saved. Then on 28 minutes Alfie was rewarded with a goal from a Matt Dawson free kick just on the edge of the penalty box, 1-0 to Downley. Second Half - Clarence came on for Jo Wilson and his pace immediately helped Downley push forward once again. His cross was converted by Liam Gay for a simple tap in on 45 minutes, 2-0 to Downley. 3 minutes later though and Chesham made it 2-1. But the home side recovered quickly and made it 3-1 with a brilliant solo run from Clarence, collecting the ball on the half way line and chipping the keeper as he entered their penalty box. Chesham then came back from another set play. Yet another corner and it was 3-2, 7 minutes into extra time.

Summary - A great performance from the Downley squad however our concentration lapsed on corners. A lost ball plus 30 seconds per substitute (x 7 Downley players) allowed nearly 10 minutes worth of extra time which also added extra pressure. However we did it, Downley Dynamos won the match and are through to the next round against Chalfont Wasps (Fixture TBC).

Downley Dynamos v Hercules Lions | Sunday 27th September 2009 – Dry, Sunny

First Half - Downley started very slowly & with a lapse in concentration at the back Hercules Lions capitalized and took an early lead with a well taken goal. Midway through the first half the Dynamos took control and were unlucky not to reach half time level after an Alfie Lee effort was cleared off the line. Second Half - Downley continued to dominate in the second half with some fine forward play from Joe Wilson and Clarence Nzeh and good battling performances all round the pitch. Had it not been for a good goalkeeping display from the opposing keeper and more clinical finishing Downley would have gone on to equalize.

Summary - All coaches were very proud and agreed that this was probably their best performance to date and the boys were extremely unlucky to be on the losing team.

.........................................................................................................................................................................................

Downley Dynamos v Aylesbury Town | Sunday 20th September 2009 - Dry, Sunny

First Half - Brilliant individual dribbling skills with clear shots on goal proved too much for Aylesbury. Always looking dangerous on the break, Liam Gay crossed from the right, passed the Aylesbury keeper for a simple tap in by Alfie Lee on 15 minutes to make it 1-0 to the home side. Even though we looked solid at the back Downley cleared their goal line on more than one occasion. In particular, a header from Alfie Lee stopped a near post equaliser from an Aylesbury corner just before half time. Second Half - More goal mouth scrambles but again we were quick to take advantage of our counter-attacking speed. We had several good long range shots combined with some clever play just in front of their goal keeper. However, Downley's second came from a penalty spot kick on 56 minutes, for a late tackle in the area. Captain Matt Dawson to make it 2-0 to Downley.

Summary - Overall we looked in control and made the most of our opportunities. We were unlucky not to score more but then Aylesbury had a couple of chances that they just couldn't finish off either. We had a goal disallowed for off-side and plenty of individual runs from half way line which our opposition found difficult to deal with. A good all-round performance from every Dynamo. A well spirited match with many highlights for the home team.

.........................................................................................................................................................................................

Downley Dynamos v Amersham Town | Sunday 13th September 2009 - Dry, light wind

First Half - Several attempts on goal from Matt Dawson, Jack Carroll, Humzah Iqbal. At the other end Gosh made a couple of important saves. Liam Bradley took a knock to the head in a 3 man free-for-all in their penalty box, before converting a free kick just outside their area on the right-hand side, to make it 1-0 to the home team. Unfortunately Amersham then equalised on the break just before half time (1-1). Second half - Our defence made up of Sam Brindley, Matt Adamson, Aaron Carroll and Jack Meziani made several clearances to halt the opposing team's attack but they couldn't stop a goal on the break which made it 1-2 to Amersham just after the restart. Alfie Lee's shot was blocked and again their counter attack slid passed our right post. Matthew Adamson's shot was also saved from a Liam Bradley corner. Liam Gay came on for Alfie and made several crosses into their danger area before Humzah's equaliser 5 minutes before the end (2-2).

Summary - The majority of the danger came from fast breaks and long hoofing balls from either Josh or the midfield. A good, well fought match. A draw was fair in the end despite the majority of the goal attempts coming from Downley players. We could have had 3 or 4 more but it wasn't to be.
